Anyone know if plans or details exist for this one? I suspect the cylinder and cylinders are from some sort of off-the-shelf pipe, but not sure about that.

I believe that engine is a fairly well-known design by Andy Ross. The design was written up in an article which you can read online here (also thanks to greenpowerscience) and he produced kits at one point. The body of the engine is a moulding- the part of the crankcase you don't see behind the flywheel is a single piece.

I don't think the kits are in production any more, so you can probably only find the engines on ebay or through other enthusiasts, but the design itself is a simple alpha type. You could almost certainly build an engine of the same layout with entirely off-the-shelf pipe, bearings etc. and machine shop skills. Unless I'm missing something making the design more complex, you could build a replica with a lathe, mill, drill and welder and some standard materials.

If you have the skills, the kit and the time, I think we'd all love to see a build of one of these engines!

Excuse me for resurrecting an old thread....

I too have been searching for the plans for this engine.

It seems that on one hand there are dozens of people all trying to design their own engines, with varying levels of success.
On the other hand, we know that this compact, powerful, simple looking engine exists and works. (and has done for 20 years!)

So, surely we need to find the plans, so we can all build/experiment/modify one?
Everywhere I see this engine (youtube, web pages etc), it is accompanied by requests for more info, offers to buy, but no responses. It seems silly that this information has vanished into thin air!

So, who owns one? Can they measure it for us?
Where is Andy Ross? Is he still alive? Will he release the design to hobbyists? Does anyone know how to contact him? Does anyone know him well enough that they can ask him?

PS: I think its a gamma, cos it has a displacer rather than 2 power pistons

Whether your design turns into a running engine or not depends on if you have access to good machine tools.

It is an alpha. He has another video that shows inside of the engine and you can see that it is an alpha. I think the cylinders leaks too much though.

Its definately an ALPHA motor, Andy Ross specialises in Alpha type motors,either in a v form or with a "Ross Yoke", I have built a small version of his Ross Yoke design, and it works well. This type was featured in Model Engineer July 1981. Ian S C

Andy Ross is alive and presumably well. He has a youtube account: aross345 . He lives in Ohio and is still active in engine building.
