There is one system that allows the displacer to virtually time it's self, and that is the Ringbom engine, where the displacer is operated by a secondary piston that also serves as the displacer rod.

A counterpoint to the value of increasing dwell time occurs to me: The air transfer speed for a given cycle speed has to increase, thus internal aerodynamic resistance (which increases as a square of speed,) has to be greater, and/or regeneration has to be less. There are a lot of variables but in some cases it might be interesting to try the opposite - a constant speed displacer. Yet another fun thing to ponder.
