Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) will develop a fully ruggedized expeditionary power generator based upon a free-piston stirling engine and linear alternator, powered by solar energy and a compact combustor uses concentrated sunlight as its energy source, with a compact combustor to power the engine when sunlight is insufficient.  BMI proposes to use three smaller modular units, each employing 1kw sunpower free-piston stirling engine driving a highly efficient, low-mass linear alternator.  The primary objective of this research effort will be to design an affordable solution for achieving reductions in expeditionary fuel usage.

I'v got a chap I call a friend Dr Don Clucas, who designed and built a 1kw, 4 cylinder ALPHA motor, it's called Whispergen, sorry not a free piston motor, it's alraedy in production, think its being built in Spain for sale in Europe.

This being a U.S. military project they can't by law accept an engine made in China. With respect to Wispergen if they would ship to U.S. we could use those.
