Re: Snifting valve

The reason why I was thinking about the Manson engine are due to my thoughts about the relationship in size between the power and displacer pistons. What happens if you apply too much heat to a LTD stirling engine? Does the "extra" pressure make the engine less efficient? (Maybe it doesn't...

Re: Snifting valve

Bumpkin, I am trying to augment the ideas of the snifter valve and of Manson's engine. On a Manson engine, the displacer and power piston are connected. On tdc and BDC, there are ports to relieve excess pressure/vacuum. Now I suspect those ports are needed since the displacer and power p are not off...

Re: Snifting valve

cbstirling2, I think your diagram should have the cranks at 90* rather than the 180* that is shown. Ian S C My apologies for a confusing diagram. Or my apologies for being confused myself. I'm trying to figure this stuff out! ;) On the diagram for the half Manson type cylinders labeled C and D are ...

Re: generators

I grabbed a 12 volt electric motor from a surplus store for only $2, it runs fine on 9 volt battery. When I tested for voltage after with a drill spinning it it does something very weird. At lower RPM it will generate up to about 6 volts but then it rather high RPM its voltage drops and then down to...

Re: Snifting valve

On a alpha engine. All you have to do is create a small air passage way inside the cold cylinder wall between the top of the piston and the skirt of piston when it is at half stroke. I am not sure how it is done on other types of engines. Aviator168, I've been thinking about what you wrote... Why d...

Ian, I wish I had a lathe!
Is there a water jacketed model out there?

Re: what cycle does this engine use?

Looking at Blade's designs, it's more than just a Manson engine with a gamma or beta layout.
3 years later, how did the prototypes function?

Re: Manson engine

I've been thinking a lot about Manson engines. The Rupp improvement is pretty ingenious. From what I read, the Manson engine as designed has about 40% less power than the stirling engine. But keep in mind that the Manson engine does not have a displacer. If one would incorporate a displacer, would t...

Re: Thermal lag plans

If I understand the pictures directly from your design, the inner tube point is aimed towards the piston. This would force the air to go along the outside and then into the expansion chamber as you mentioned. So in effect that would double the length of the tube? Because if I understand simpler ther...

Aviator: "All you have to do is create a small air passage way inside the cold cylinder wall between the top of the piston and the skirt of piston when it is at half stroke." Does something like that apply to beta and gamma engines? Manson engine also perfected as the Manson Ross have a gr...

Re: Thermal lag plans

Derwood,
I saw your engine on youtube. Looks cool!
Looking at your plans, why the need for the inner tube?
I guess, I do not understand the theory of it.
Does it act as a choke?? :question)

Re: What is the difference between thermal lag and lamina flow engines

I have an old 0.35 McCoy airplane engine, I was thinking of converting to a thermal lag engine. It still has compression, so I assume the piston would do the trick. Approx ~16mm bore and stroke there abouts.

What would it take to convert that?
