Re: My stirling engine school project

Yes, but you need to add the Heylandt Crown on top of the hot piston. Give it 1 mm to 1.5 mm clearance on the diameter, and 2 mm on the end, the crown should be as light as possible, mild steel is OK, but thin stainless steel is better. Make the bore of the cylinder and hot cap the same. If you use ...

Re: My stirling engine school project

Here's a rough(very)sketch of an ALPHA hot end, note where the air transfer port is. The piston in any Stirling Engine should fit very well, if you place the piston in the open (at each end) cylinder it should slide through under it's own weight, and if you block one end the piston should stop slidi...

Re: My stirling engine school project

The same motor before I changed it to air cooling, with the little power hacksaw that sometimes replaces the generator. It will actually cut a 13 mm steel bar in a bit over 20 minutes, not too bad for about 5Watts of power.

Re: My stirling engine school project

Hi User1, If you are building an ALPHA motor, it"s worth down loading Andy Ross's book "Making Stirling Engines", it's a free download, if you print it out it's 68 pages. No, steel wool won't work, you must have 2 well fitting pistons in proper cylinders, one the hot cylinder has an e...

Re: Burnt pancake displacer (carbon foam)

Thanks for that Bumkin, as a first thought it could be used to line the furnace around the hot cap of a Stirling Engine. Also the blackened stuff (what ever you want to call it) could be wrapped round the cool end to dissipate heat. Something to think about.

Re: "Hi...We are new here!" First posts here (or anywhere is OK)

Welcome Voxelman, you'll find all sorts here. For home and water heating, go geothermal. For electridity I am coming to the conclusion that the best way I can see is if a group (city block, sub division, small town) get together and provide their own power, and at the same time their own cell and in...

Re: Hello from a new member

When ever you have a few minutes to spare it's worth going right to the start and read a thread or two, and slowly work your way through, you'll find some good ideas, and some that are "well a bit odd", but all learning.

Re: Need a 50 watt power output providing stirling engine

If you have a machine shop, and know what you are doing, 50 Watts is not impossible to build your self. In this country I would expect to spend about $NZ 500 for materials to build such a motor, that's why my bigger motors have cost no more than $NZ 40, and produce 5 Watts, a lot of the stuff I use ...

Re: Small Beta type stirling engine not running

I think I can see why the motor wont work, you have a large clearance around the displacer rod, you need absolute minimum without binding/friction.

Re: Designing a Beta Stirling Engine (Please help)

Sarahwad, I imagine that you propose to build a pressurized motor. I would suggest that you down load Andy Ross's book "Making Stirling Engines" (it's free). I have run one of my larger unpressurized BETA motors, 1 3/4" bore using a large Freznel lens 24" x 18". It was summe...

Re: Design and Manufacture of Beta Stirling

If you don't have a lathe the cooling fins can be made up from aluminium discs, all with the same size hole then alternate large and small outside diameter. One of my motors has fins like that, with three thin, long bolts through all the fins and spacers. The aluminium came from a surplus pot from t...
