Re: Stirling engine project
Aluminium is ok for the mechanical parts, but not ideal for the displacer for a number of reasons. First it conducts heat too fast from the hot end, to the cold end. Next if you are going to use anything hotter than a candle, or small meths burner, it won't stand the heat. Ian S C DSC01133 (800x600...

Re: Durability of aluminium parts
Yes aluminium alloy is quite ok, but don't use it for bearing surfaces, aluminium against aluminium does not work. Use steel shafts, and either use ball races(best)bronze, or cast iron bushes, or a bearing grade plastic. To get a good seal on the displacer rod, a good fitting bush of at least 4 dia...

Re: Stirling engine project
HI Riccardo - Just joined myself a few minutes ago and noticed your forum request. I have made a few with all aluminium and they work extremely well. They are light in weight and can take a fair bit of heat and your wall clearance seems OK to me, though there may be a few qualified people out there...

Durability of aluminium parts
Question: I'm concidering making all of the mechanical parts of a gamma stirling engine from aluminium (not including displacer, displacer housing or power piston). Would this be a mistake or is aluminium durable enough to last for years?

Re: My suggestions for wall thickness
Thanks Alfista. On a different note, do you know of any radial/rotary hot air engines that actually work and have a good rpm speed?Alfista wrote:

Thickness of hot end wall
Can anybody tell me how thick the hot end stainless steel tube is likely to be on this engine or what would be a recommended thickness for an engine this size?:

The fastest stirling engine in the world
Would be interested to know if anyone knows of any possible contenders for the fastest rpm stirling/hot air engine in the world?. This is not an official recognition or prize winning ceremony so feel free to submit any legends you heard at the bar as well as some genuine examples of very fast engines.

Re: Pressurising Beta Stirling Engine
To pressurise a motor both sides of the piston are effected, the crankcase is pressurised, so the bell crank and connecting rods would make this design impractical as a pressurised as a pressurised machine. The simplest layout is the one often seen with a two throw crankshaft, with the displacer cr...
