hot Air Beam Engine with cooling and generator
This is my first attempt at making a Beam Engine. This engine will be using the Watt linkage for the displacer. The engine is based on a displacer of 74mm and a stroke of 38mm. The piston is 38mm and will have a stroke of 64mm being a ratio of approx. 2.5 to 1. The water pump is driven by an air ope...

Hello Aviator 168,
Can one use a good efficient radiator here with a fan blow if you have enough power source to spare. On the small models they work very well.

Thanks Ian - Never looked at it that way. We will see how I go next week when I am back from our holiday in the rain.

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Thanks Ian.I do use dewatering and/or kerosene fluid for aluminium as it is the only thing that works. Got me on the speed though. I was always taught fast with alloys, but this is not necessary so! I have found chattering does stop when going really slow - So your point is taken as gospel to me. Go...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Thank you Thanh - I think I see where I may have been wrong and that is the angle of relief. Mine has been very low or flat compared to yours. Excellent info with the pics - Love them.
I will try what you pics show and let you know in a few days. Like your work Thanh

Hi James - If you can get the book 'Sterling Engine Projects' volume 1 by James G. Rizzo - From Project 5 to 10 he explains and builds an enclosed Sterling Engine.

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Wow! Thanh. Nice engine with all that paint work. I have to ask you, how did you make the fins with a parting off blade? I have tried many times without not much success. I don't know what I am doing wrong, but the bloody things keep chattering and then snapping the blade. Checked the angle of cutti...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Thanks Ian - I must get some steel shafting for the cranks as you suggest, but I do find it hard to work with and there is no way I can make a crank from a solid piece - Your the Guru here Ian and I am overwhelmed with your work. I promise to try and make a better one next though it is going to be a...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Hi Thanh - The crank shaft is silver soldered, the pins are 3/16" hardened steel and the main shaft is 1/4" Brass which probably wasn't a good idea as it does flex easily. The brass shanks (side plates) were drilled as straight as I could using 4 jaw chuck, however these can be done on a g...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
This is the finished engine now showing the radiator on the top. I finished a display at our gemshow today at Tolga with this engine running for 5 hours non stop in 33 dgree heat. The radiator kept the cooling water quite low and was pleasing to see it not getting over hot at any time. The diaphragm...

Re: Heater & Regenerator Design
I have no idea of the tubular heat exchanges either, apparently they do seem to work very well. What Ian is saying about the Gamma design is good. It is only a small way from the Displacer rod and makes it easy to fit, however, I have found if you are worried about dead space, it may be worth using ...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
That's some high revs there Ian. I like your idea of using steel water pipe for the power piston. I certainly will be using bronze as my next cylinder for another venture so will use water pipe as the piston one that one. I hope I can get to that mark of a 1000 revs with thermal water cooling and a ...

Re: Sterling Diaphragm Engine
Wow! Nice one Ian. That is a superb engine. I see your point about the radiator and shaft length, but I am stuffed now the way I have set it up on the crankshaft. I will use this engine for trials of different ways as the base and top plates have holes drilled all over it. I have just come back from...
