Thanks for all the email on this engine. I've made some improvements. I messed up a bit! Almost blew it up! (don't do this at home.....it's stupid!) And yet I'm still alive! Check it out!! http://boydhouse.com/stirling/horizontal/index.html It sure was fun to watch running. Reminded me of my ...

Rodger, I think you might be right about the smoke. I run into that problem from time to time about the power cylinder "gumming up". I just tell them to clean it out with Acetone or something. It goes away after a while. wardle3, Vaccume is only half of the problem. Pressure is the other h...

Re: Help with aluminum piston

The piston length.........Too short and it will try to turn in the cylinder.......Too long and you are wasting energy moving it. On a 1"long piston I would pick around 3/4" long plus or minus. Drilling holes in it to make more of a vacuum?...... Sorry I am not sure of the question here. we...

A Stirling engine is a temperature differential engine. It runs on the difference in the two temperatures. The greater the difference between the two the more potential it has. But you can also lower the temperature on the hot side if the cold side also goes down in temp. Or visa versa. Just keep th...

Horizontal tin can engine.......running?

In the final phases of this engine. Thought you guys would like a peek before it is done.

http://boydhouse.com/stirling/horizontal/index.html

Initial runs show some more work to be done. 3 or 4 cycles and it stops. Not from friction, but lack of power.

Air Cooled Hot Air Engine Plans (tin can engine kind of)

I ran across these plans to build an air cooled hot air engine on ebay. It was an old 1961 Pop Sci magazine article. I purchased them. About three weeks later I ran across an air cooled hot air engine for sale on the internet by an antique dealer. Well I was surprised when I realized it was the same...

I wonder how long it takes to convert water to steam and then back again.

Would that be a process that is too long for a cycle in an engine?

Just a thought.

I like your idea. Sort of a half steam and half stirling engine.

Keep going!

Take lots of pictures! You can't have too many! Because it is made from "tin cans" you know I'm interested in seeing it run! Sounds like me when I first built one from scratch. Spent more time "fixing and redoing it" that building it the first time! LOL That is when you really le...

Yes they do run. I'd say most of them run the first time. Maybe 20% have some sort of problem the first time out. If it is the walking beam engine, most people email me and get help. But we get them running after a few runs. I wouldn't put up the webpage if the engine didn't run. As I don't ma...

Niels,

Sorry for the problem registering. It is hard to keep the spamers off the forum and sometime I make a mistake. In your case, you did not give a first and last name when you registered.

That got you deleted..........I think??????

Niels, Depends on the stirling engine you are building. If you are talking about the "Walking Beam Engine" http://www.boydhouse.com/stirling/index.html The gap should be about 1/4" tp 3/8" between the displacer piston and the displacer cylinder. The job of the displacer piston is...

Hi Rodger, There is really no way to have known they were spammers. I can look at the more detailed profiles and see it. Sorry they get through! Congradulations on the "first run" sure is magic to watch, isn't it! That is why I offer the plans for free on the main website. I love to hear a...
