Re: Robinson Hot Air Engine

Trevor, well done!

PM Research sells some powerful "toy" Stirling engines.

I have a a couple of theirs and both can run toy Mamod workshops.

Re: manson engine with alternate breathing

With the one Manson engine I saw, it wasn't powerful. Alpha and beta engines are proven good engines.

It looks like it wants to run but has too much friction...

Re: oil

At the sewing shop, they have Singer and Dritz brand. The Singer oil has a slight smell - like 3 in 1 oil. The Dritz is 100% odorless. I reassembled using the Singer oil and it runs great. I still wonder though if the odorless Dritz may be better? Any odor outgassing is evaporating oil. So I wonder ...

Re: oil

Ian, What was your results with the gun oil? I have a Stirling engine with metal pistons, interestingly the manual calls for WD-40. But after many runnings, it stopped working. The hot cap got gummed up and carboned up. After cleaning it runs great but I will take it apart reclean and use sewing oil...

Re: Square pistons/cylinders

A strong second place design is a L shaped Alpha. You pay a price for more dead space due to distance between the hot and cold space but vastly simple linkage.

Re: Square pistons/cylinders

Which steak engines had square pistons? With Stirling engines being over 100 years old there is no reason to reinvent them. I recommend sticking to proven designs. I've have a handful of engines and I tend to sell off bad runners. I've noticed that alpha engines give the best power followed by beta ...

Re: Whispergen mk4

I would think cast iron would work. I suspect the thermal property is similar.
The benefits of stainless is corrosion resistance.

Re: Design and Manufacture of Beta Stirling

After receiving it in the mail, I was puzzled as well. Why on Earth, is there so few cooling fins and not all the way up? I wish I had a lathe! Installing aluminum fins could be done in a clamping fashion so they could be removed if need be. Maybe I could drill out finned computer heat sinks? Take 2...

Re: Design and Manufacture of Beta Stirling

Speaking of cooling area, this is a dual gamma engine that I recently purchased from Germany. It runs good but I think it could run even better. I think there should be fins or a water jacket on the upper part of the displacer. I see no reason for that area to be "bare". Do others agree? I...

Re: Sterling Engine not running

I have one of those engines, a good runner. That's an alpha engine, so no gland and no displacer. It should only be lubricated with extremely fine graphite powder. I recommend cleaning pistons and cylinders with cotton q-tips and rubbing alcohol. After you assemble it again, when you turn it over, y...

Re: Small Stirling Engine

I have the same Stirling engine and "generator" and I believe it easily lights the led. Perhaps the generator is faulty presuming your engine has good RPM.
