Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

I actually very much like "fools" effort to normalize all the variables so that a 1 degree rise in temperature equals, or can be represented by one joule of heat. Nothing wrong with that. The problem stems from the disparity between the old theory of heat as caloric a conserved "fluid...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

Easy, tiger. Just because the engine is only making use of the pressure differentials available between 300K and 400K, doesn't mean a calculation involving the total internal energy of the working fluid, including the 'unused' energy from 0-300K can't be valid. Tom has 20 apples. He eats five and l...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

The steam engine running on the Rankin cycle, with latent heat to reject, is even less efficient than a Carnot or Stirling. Can't attribute the theory to that. It would even be less efficient yet if the latent heat were left in during compression. Back work is inevitable. Have you read the lectures...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

Well, 0° K on a PV diagram, I think, is your interpretation. A PV diagram is Pressure Volume. So "all the way down" would represent 0°K ? Temperature is represented by curves. At any rate the actual States of the engine plotted on the diagram don't go "all the way down" to zero d...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

Tom you are too combative to respond. Me combative? Just telling it like I see it. "Importing all the internal energy down to absolute zero" is nonsense, bordering on delusional IMO. Where you guys come up with this crazy stuff is anybody's guess. As Professor Richard Feynman said, "...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

How is Qhz the "maximum"? Qhz is not the "heat" supplied. Qhz is Qcz , the pre-existing environment in thermal equilibrium before any heat is supplied, added or taken in by the engine. Plus the few additional joules actually supplied. As you say: "the cycle starts at Qcz, (...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

When someone jumps in and speaks for somebody else, I tend to assume one or the other or both are "sock puppets". "Fool and I are defending..." Defending who from what? Some hobbyist on a model engine forum? Maybe you should both get a life. IMO one person who did more than anyth...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

Years ago, I came across an article by Tesla. He proposed a "self acting engine" something along these lines: Compress_20240427_222542_2565.jpg Tesla was talking about a machine that produced liquid air. A combination heat engine and heat pump that ran on cold or the free ambient heat in t...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

How would you or anyone else determine that an engine exceeded the "Carnot Limit"? Measure the temperature of the heat input and the temperature of the sink? The hot and cold "reservoirs"? It's not hard to measure the combustibles expended... As I've said, combustibles outside t...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

Lying and twisting my arguments "Lying and twisting" how? All you did is rewrite the Carnot equation with a new set of symbolic variables. What does that prove? That's your opinion. No. It's science, and backed by years of refinement. Nonsense. The Carnot equation is backed by exactly not...

Re: The TRUTH? η = 1 – (Qc / Qh) = 1 – (Tc / Th)

... The Carnot theorem, based on a description of a perfect engine, and when reversed, a heat pump, is a theoretical maximum that every real engine can't, never will, and never has, obtained. The only way to prove it wrong is to build an engine that exceeds the efficiency. It must be tested and ret...

Sounds like a more elegant design that does the job. Great idea.

Re: Isothermal Heat Transfer

The piston on my LTD stirling isn't as leaky as I thought it would be. I've just had the engine apart to tinker further with the temporary displacer, so I checked the iron piston clearance by setting it partway down the iron bore and pouring some 95% alcohol in to see how fast it would leak past th...

a2+b2=C2 would be pretty useless if it only worked for equilateral triangles. Pythagoras is spinning in his grave. There is of course, no such thing as an equilateral right triangle. Which is the point. There is no such thing as a "perfect" Carnot engine either An algebraic formul...

Re: Isothermal Heat Transfer

You just type 5 paragraphs explaining that pistons leak How is a piston that stays cold, atmospheric temperature, going to heat up and seal? That's one reason I often make my own pistons if necessary, especially if running an engine on ice. Otherwise, as I've already said: "Most Stirling engin...
